Q: Nick, Can you please tell us a bit about yourself personally and professionally.
I am a qualified chemist with experience working in both agricultural and pharmaceutical chemical companies. When I relocated to Bristol I thought my position with Octavius Hunt would only be short term but 26 years later I’m still here! I started as a projects technician and have moved up through the company to become Technical Director. It’s great to work with such a unique product. Our smoke technology allows us to adapt to various pest control and disinfectant applications.
Q: Imagine that you met someone in an elevator and was asked to explain Octavius Hunt in 30 seconds or less… Can you give us a 2 sentence ‘elevator pitch’ about your business and what you do?
We are a UK manufacturer of smoke generators which effectively treat pests and diseases in any enclosed area. We export worldwide and have a strong technical team along with product innovation experience.
Q: How did you get started in this business?
After I finished my degree in Chemistry I worked as an analytical chemist for an agri-chemical company called FBC in Cambridge. I then moved to a pharmaceutical company, also based in Cambridge, working in their laboratory. As I mentioned before I have worked with Octavius Hunt now for 26 years. I have seen both the company grow with world-wide exports and our range of products develop significantly over the years. We have embraced new regulatory requirements and have grown with the industry. I am looking forward to the next phase in product development.
Q: Can you describe your customers / what type of customers does Octavius Hunt have?
Our customer base varies from large pest control and agri-chemical organisations such as Syngenta and Bayer to pest control, agricultural and disinfectant distributors.
Q: What are some of your “keys to success” in building your customer base?
Octavius Hunt offer customers a reliable partnership with excellent customer service and technical support. We have the ability to work with customers to develop bespoke products and have demonstrated great success in this area. We offer a high standard of technical support and have data to back up all our products. Most importantly we can offer a wide range of products not supplied by other manufacturers.
Q: Is there anything about your business that you feel makes it special?
We are the only manufacturer to provide own branding for customers and such a wide range of products. Along with this we offer bespoke products and sizes which gives flexibility to our customers. We have strong technical support and R&D capabilities, allowing us to quickly react to industry demands and trends such as the call for natural pest control solutions.
Q: What kind of technology advances do you see that will likely affect this sector over the coming few years?
There is a growing demand for natural pest control products and we are moving with this trend. We will focus on more environmentally friendly active ingredients for our smoke generators and broaden our natural product range.
Q: Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? In the next ten years?
We have an active NPD programme and are looking to introduce exciting new products both to complement our existing products and for new applications.
